I found this book for $1 at a used book store. I was attracted to the cover and started it with no expectations. I guess it's supposed to be scary but I found it to be more funny, like an 80s slasher movie. This comparison is especially true because Héloïse was published in 1980 and it was written with such vivid imagery. A few passages were particularly poignant.

I quite enjoyed this novella by Canadian/French author Anne Hebert, about a young man who gets obsessed about a mysterious woman dressed in period clothing he sees in the Paris metro. I will definitely read more by Anne Hebert.
More beautiful than I remember.

The greatest influence on her writing, however, was undoubted...more
